"What is your problem?" Van exclaimed, doing his best to stand up to the total jerk that was Auren Malfoy. It was a better job than he'd usually done in the past.

"Aww, come on, just use magic on me," Auren taunted him as he shoved the smaller boy's head down into a snowdrift. "Oh, right, you can't, because you're just a no-maj."

Actually, Van couldn't because he couldn't reach his wand, but that was beside the point. He was sort of stuck, and it was pretty unfortunate. He didn't particularly want to drown in snow.

The ball had been fun, as she'd expected, though she could admit to being nervous again, now. She was supposed to meet Arty outside, despite the snow and the chill. But she somehow managed to keep a bounce in her step as she all but trotted downstairs and out onto the grounds, looking for him. As she rounded one side of the castle and took another sweeping glance across what should've been the green of grass, however, she halted quite suddenly.

"What are you doing?" She called out to the Malfoy kid, leaning to one side as she tried to get a better look at what was going on. "Is that-- Hey!" And suddenly she was moving forward, mind fumbling over the names that could belong to the other kid.

no no no Arty was on cloud nine. Somehow he managed to ask Ellie to the ball AND he had a blast doing it. It was so much fun, but he kind of regretted not kissing her at the end of the night. Was that how they were suppose to go? Anywhoo, he had other opportunities to do so and this time on the grounds could be just the moment....

...Or not...

Walking near the garden, Arty heard Ellie's voice, but it wasn't directed at him. No, it sounded... Scared? Confused? Something was obviously going on and he needed to see what. He walked around the corner to see Ellie standing near Malfoy and- Van? Arriving late to the party, he wasn't sure what was going on but began walking toward them to inspect. "Everything okay?" he asked wearily.

"Oh, look! A girl no-maj to come rescue you! That's so sweet." Auren gave Van a second to breathe, then got him in a headlock as he turned to face the others as they arrived. "Everything's fine," he offered, his manner blasé. "Just move along."

"Uh," Van disagreed, feeling stupid as he struggled to pull Auren's arm from around his neck. "Actually--"

Then, of course, Auren was twirling his wand in his hand like the arrogant prick he was, just waiting to see what would happen next.

"I'm not--" she started, taken aback. But that wasn't really the point at all. The point was her parentage, and Eleanor had no interest in talking about them. No, less than that, even. It made her so angry she just about wanted to cry. Why was it her fault that her parents thought she and her sister were monsters? At least the elder daughter had found love with someone genuine, who helped to take care of the both of them. It baffled her, even to this day, how her parents failed to see that she was the way she was because of them and the genetics she had inherited from them.

But Arty was there, and he wouldn't let...

Except, his family was pureblooded as well. Did he even know that she wasn't? Surely they kept track of such things if Auren wanted to throw it in her face that way. But Arthur wasn't like that. She just knew it. He couldn't be.

"Let him go!" She countered eventually, tearing her eyes from Arty and frowning deeply at the jerk across from her.

no no no Hearing Malfoy speak to Ellie in that manner made Arty feel a sort of anger that he'd never felt before. He stepped up beside her, looking from Malfoy to Van in the headlock. Ellie spoke before he could even bring himself to, and took a step forward in case either of them decided to go at each other.

Having had no real problem with Auren in the past, he thought that maybe talking to him calmly could help, not really being one for violence. "Hey, Auren.. just let the guy go, okay?" he suggested calmly. His gaze shifted between the two again and he took another step forward.

"Let him gooo, let him gooo," Auren mocked them in an obnoxious, high-pitched baby voice. Van tried to say something about how that would be nice, but instead, Auren pressed his wand to his head and cast a spell that made him get all tongue-tied. Van coughed and sputtered around the unpleasant sensation.

"What are you even doing with the mudblood, Thorne?" Auren snarled. "I thought you had better taste than that."

She sort of hated herself for it, but she wasn't sure what to make of Arty's attempted intervention. Sure, he was trying to stop it. But he also didn't sound super upset about it, which she couldn't tell, yet, what that meant. Her eyebrows remained all scrunched together in confusion, but she found herself reaching for her wand to provide the counter-spell to Auren's. Except then he said that and her hand stopped by her thigh.

How was it possible for her to be both of those things? Evil for having magic and yet also worthless and underserving of that magic to begin with. It wasn't fair.

Her face felt like it was on fire as she let her gaze drop down to the snow at her feet. Eleanor felt terrible for basically failing to help one of her own, but she had never been much of a hero type to begin with. It was easy on the quodpot pitch to feel helpful and relevant, in amongst her teammates. There, they fought for the same thing: the win. But here she was lost. Even though it probably gave Auren exactly what he wanted, she lifted that same pathetic hand to wipe at her cheek, utterly dismayed.

no no no Well Arty had absolutely had it. He was used to Malfoy being a total prick but calling Ellie- Ellie that.. that word just pissed him off even more. He didn't know what came over him, he had never felt that way before, but he walked up to Auren and went to sock him in the face. "Don't you dare call her that!" he yelled at him, not playing the nice guy anymore.

Ah haaaaaa, she was probably going to cry! It was great. Auren snickered, then tossed Van aside when he saw the beginning of Thorne's pathetic approach. He leaned back as the other boy punched, so that he took the blow on his cheekbone but not as hard as he should have.

Wussy little Arty didn't know what Auren knew about violence, and that meant this would just be fun as hell, didn't it?

He was holding his wand, so a punch wasn't going to work. Instead, Auren went for the side of Arty's head with his elbow.

Her head snapped up in surprise, eyes frightened and saucer-like. "Arthur!" She gasped out, as though that would help somehow. Still, she lifted her eyebrows at the punch -- but she just couldn't watch. Not if Arty was going to get hurt. Instead, she swallowed hard before darting to Van's side, quietly undoing the spell as she should have done before.

"Sorry," she murmured, cheeks red all over again. "I should've--" But she just shook her head, uncertain, before risking a glance back towards the boys as she tried to think of something that might make them stop. Really, she wasn't worth all this. Van was, though, she decided. So a secret little part of her hoped Arthur would make a solid point, while the rest felt horrified for having thought it to begin with.

no no no The elbow to the head disoriented Arthur quite a bit, causing him to fall toward the ground only to catch himself with his hand. He stood up again, shaking his head and then looked at Ellie who was taking care of Van. As long as he could stall enough for them to get out, he didn't care what happened. That just wasn't right.

"That all you've got?" Arthur mocked, realizing quickly that it probably wasn't a good strategy. He drew his wand quickly, sending a disarming spell his direction as he took a step backward and away from the other two.

Van shook his head. "It's OK," he gasp-murmured, laboring to catch his breath. Meanwhile, Auren seemed to have forgotten about his wand and was watching curiously to see how Arty proceeded. He was surprised by the disarming spell, which caused his wand to pop out of his hand, but he had tried to sidestep and it hadn't hit full-on. As a result, he was able to make a sort of flying leap after it. The whole setup would likely end with him barreling into Arty whether he got the wand back or not.

Why was he taunting Auren? It didn't make sense. Eleanor shook her head at Arthur, even though he wasn't really paying her attention at that point, but turned back to Van when he spoke. "No it's not," she told him firmly, a hand reaching out gently for his arm. When she looked up again, Auren was jumping after his wand, and she just wanted to stop it. Absolutely nothing else came to mind besides a sticking charm, as lame as she felt that was. So she scrambled for her wand, aiming at Auren's feet.

no no no Arty noticed Ellie's spell and immediately cast "Accio" at Auren's wand to try and further make him unable to get it. His eye flashed over to Ellie worriedly. Sure there was a risk that he could get beaten to a pulp, but as long as it was him and not Ellie or Van it was worth it.
